Sign up for Medicare at 65, or suspend and delay Medicare until later in life?
A complicated question smart Baby Boomers in Buffalo are now learning to ask themselves.
Why?
Because the Federal Government continues to expand and extend the arbitrary and assigned full-retirement age. This leaves many, if not most, assuming and accepting they must continue to work past their 65th birthday (either by choice ‘cause they love their job, or by circumstance ‘cause they need the money), and wonder what they have to do about Medicare.
The top 3 most common questions I get routinely and regularly asked on our Medicare SmartStart Program surveys and assessments:
(1) Can I delay Medicare until after 65, if I keep my health insurance at work?
(2) If I do delay Medicare, will I have to pay a penalty later?
(3) Is Medicare health insurance or my Employer health insurance better?
Do these sound familiar? And you in a similar situation?
Well, first, I want to dispel and dismiss some common myths about Medicare you may have heard, like “you have to sign up for Medicare at 65.”
You do not.
It really all depends.
And it really all depends on a handful of factors. There is no cookie cutter answer, like many insurance brokers around town want you to believe.
You need to take into account some significant and serious implications, such as:
(1) Where you work and the size of the company…
(2) Type of health insurance coverage the company provides you…
(3) The cost per pay period (monthly) of your Employer health insurance versus the cost of Medicare (monthly)...
(4) Total projected out-of-pocket costs of your Employer health insurance versus the out-of-pocket costs of a Medicare insurance plan…
(5) Tax implications of stopping your Employer health insurance at certain times and when best appropriate and acceptable to move to Medicare…
(6) If you do decide to delay Medicare, how to legally not pay a costly late penalty later in life (and what you can do ahead of time to cover you’re butt)…
(7) Plus a few others that are too involved to discuss in this short article.
There’s a lot which should be considered if you want to successfully start Medicare smartly.
And it would be wildly irresponsible of me to make a suggestion to you reading this about the action steps for you to take without sitting down, side-by-side and having you share your situation.
**IMPORTANT NOTE** I’ve seen an astonishing and alarming amount of folks being referred to use my free Medicare SmartStart Program recently, likely due to its national recognition and praise in some local press. These folks were turning 65, did not seek and search for accurate advice or answers and made some foolish assumptions where we have had to help correct some costly mistakes and major mess ups they made when thinking they could, or should, delay Medicare at 65 when they can’t, or shouldn’t.
When you’re turning 65, you have to either file your forms to sign up for Medicare, or submit something separate to suspend Medicare --- you can’t do nothing.
Ok, there’s a lot to deal with, right? I get it.
And as an active adult in WNY, who’s always on the run, you need a smart solution to cut through all the clutter.
If you want some light shed on your situation, your hand held the whole way, and making your move to Medicare simpler, easier, seemingly stress-free and almost effortless, I can do just that. Here's how...
