There are a lot of assumptions the Federal Government makes on behalf of its citizens nearing age 65, but you know what they say about assumptions…
And without proper preparation and planning on your part, these assumptions can have serious implications and negative impact that can last your lifetime.
With the constant and consistent changes to the rules and regulations around Medicare for anyone born after 1954, very few folks are actually automatically enrolled in Medicare at age 65 anymore.
The only situation where this can still be true, is if you are already collecting your Social Security benefit a minimum of 4 months prior to turning 65. More on this later…
In 1983, the National Committee To Preserve Social Security & Medicare came to the obvious conclusion there was a gross mis-management of both the Social Security and Medicare trust funds, and they would become bankrupt soon-than-later.
This concern created a mandatory and mandated extension of the arbitrary and assigned full-retirement age past the previous 65 to a sliding scale based on birth year.
Here is a quick-reference look at what your Federally approved, assigned and arbitrary retirement age is:
Born before 1943 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 65
Born 1943 – 1954 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66
Born in 1955 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66+2
Born in 1956 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66+4
Born in 1957 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66+6
Born in 1958 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66+8
Born in 1959 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 66+10
Born in 1960 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age 67
Born after 1960 >>> full-retirement to collect Social Security is at age ???
So, for most folks, in most situations and scenarios, nearing age 65, there are two (2) decision to make, one more important than the other.
The first decision, which the majority make, is to willing keep working until their full-retirement age before they decide to retire and collect their Social Security income benefit.
The second decision, which I believe might be the most important decision you will need to make and one that deserves special attention (maybe even more attention than you even think to give it), involves signing up and starting your Medicare benefits at 65, or suspending until after 65 and signing up later in life --- without having to pay a costly late penalty, of course!
Often times, it makes significantly more financial sense to move to Medicare at 65, even if you’ll continue to remain working until later in life and have health insurance options from work.
Why?
Because commercial health insurance coverage is usually more expensive per pay period than Medicare is per month, and gives you arguably worse coverage, with higher copays and costs with less extra bonus benefits. But truth be told, you won’t know for sure until you sit down and share your exact specifics and situation with someone.
Ok, there’s a lot to deal with, right? I get it.
And as an active adult in WNY, who’s always on the run, you need a smart solution to cut through all the clutter.
If you want some light shed on your situation, your hand held the whole way, and making your move to Medicare simpler, easier, seemingly stress-free and almost effortless, I can do just that. Here's how...
