There are a few different ways to sign up for Medicare Part A, and it depends on which situation sounds most like yours.

So, ask yourself these three quick questions...

(QUESTION 1)

“Are you pre-65, NOT WORKING and getting income benefits from Social Security (or Railroad Retirement Board) now?

- If you answered ‘YES,’ you will have your Medicare Part A benefits activated automatically

- If you answered ‘NO,’ you will need to apply to have your Medicare Part A benefits activated. Click here for steps on how to sign up for Medicare

(QUESTION 2)

“Are you pre-65, CURRENTLY WORKING but planning to retire and START getting income benefits from Social Security (or Railroad Retirement Board) beginning when you turn 65?

- If you answered ‘YES,’ you will have your Medicare Part A benefits activated automatically

(QUESTION 3)

“Are you pre-65, CURRENTLY WORKING but planning to CONTINTUE WORKING past-65 at an employer with LESS THAN 20 employees?

- If you answered ‘YES,’ you will need to self-start your Medicare application, nothing will be automatic. Federal CMS rules and regulations require both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B to be activated, even when working past 65, if at an employer with less than 20 employees. - If you answered ‘NO,’ because your employer has 20 or more employees, the Federal CMS regulations do not apply to your situation, and you need to do nothing with Medicare. However, check with your company HR department or Benefits Administrator to be sure they, your employer, do not want (or wish) you to be on Medicare as a company policy.

** Even if you are not required by any of the above situations to apply for, and activate your Medicare benefits, it is always a smart idea to compare the costs of Medicare against to costs of your company coverage. Often times, Medicare may be more financially favorable --- which means you can fore go the expensive health insurance from work, enjoy lower costs with Medicare, while continue to remain employed for the paycheck.
