Which means you more than likely continued to keep working from age 65 until now (either by choice âcause you like your job, or by circumstance âcause you needed the money).
Either way, while remaining actively employed, you should have been able to keep the Health Insurance plan your employer provided you --- which means youâve maintained, what the Federal Government classifies as âcredible coverage.â
This is good news.
Hopefully, you would have pre-filed your âProof of Credible Coverageâ within the 3-month window before you turned 65, which will make life much easier for you signing up for Part B later. If you didnât, you will have more hoops to jump through now to get out of the costly lifetime late enrollment penalty.
What You Need To Sign Up For Medicare Part B If You Already Have Part A
With the advent of new technology, there are features online now, that are being pushed to the public, to give you the opportunity to sign up for Medicare right at home --- but without any reliable resources, instructions, or guidance to hold your hand along the way.
And, for those who already have Medicare Part A active, you CANNOT use the online forms to apply for just Part B --- you still have to fill out and file paper forms --- one of which needs detailed documentation, completed and signed by a company official, about your work history at the company, the coverage they have provided you, and the benefit years that you were covered.
This form is required to be requested by you --- it is not given to you willingly --- but we have blank copies available at our Medicare Resource Center office, in Clarence, for your use, should you want to avoid hunting for it yourself, or avoid calling 1-800-Numbers to talk to phone robots and play phone-tag tango.
In addition to the âEmployer Informationâ form, there is an actual âMedicare Part Bâ application form, too.
Your details for this form are fairly simple and straight-forward, but the bottom half has a secondary spot for your witness, their signature, and concise processing comments --- so, it is recommended to have a credible second set of eyes look everything over before submitting --- unless you are 100% confident you have done things complete and correct the first time, but why risk messing things up, just to do it all twice? Click HERE to schedule a time to stop in the office if youâd like our help.
Your Medicare Part B Application Package Will Include:
- âEmployer Informationâ form (eliminates lifetime late enrollment penalty)Â
- âProof of Credible Coverageâ form (supporting document for âEmployerâ form)
- âMedicare Part B Applicationâ form (request to activate Part B benefits)
The last thing suggested with your Medicare Part B application package is a âCoordination of Coverageâ form --- which again, is not given to you willingly --- but we have blank copies available at our Medicare Resource Center office, in Clarence, for your use.
Your âCoordination of Coverageâ form details and documents important and impactful information to ensure you do not have to pay for a high-cost COBRA plan, or worse, have a gap or lapse in health insurance coverage due to improper or poor planning.
When completing your âCoordination of Coverageâ form, you will want to disclose the following:
- When your last day of employment will be (first day of unemployment)
- When your last day of health insurance will be (first day of loss of employer coverage)
- When you want your Medicare Part B benefits to begin (first day of Medicare)
- How will you pay for your Medicare Part B monthly premium (government wants their money before they give you what youâve worked hard for and deserve)
How To Sign Up For Medicare Part B If You Already Have Medicare Part B
Now, when you have all these documents gathered, you will need to find a day and time to file them at the correct Social Security office.  You will know the correct Social Security office to use based on your zip code.
Much like the DMV now, most locations do not allow walk-ins. Gone are the old way of showing up before the doors open, to take a number, and sit and wait, while tapping your feet for 4 hours, hoping you get called next. Appointments are required for in-person filing.
Another option is to call Social Security to confirm things are completed correctly before mailing or faxing. This is for the insane person who wants to spend a lot of time and end up getting nowhere.
Even if you can talk to a real human, after the unpleasant phone call, everything still has to be sent to the National Central Processing office, for them to receive and resend to the correct Social Security office based on your zip code to go through the multi-step approval verification process. This option if NOT recommended if you can avoid because of the significant time delay.
